International Day of Action for Rivers and Against Dams

International Day of Action for Rivers and Against Dams

The International Day of Action for Rivers and Against Dams was inspired and ordered by the participants of the First International Meeting of People Affected by Dams - the so-called first international meeting of people affected by dams, which took place in March 1997 in Curitiba, Brazil.

Dams and weirs: yes or no? The importance of this question is highlighted by today's international initiative for river protection. Every year on March 14th, thousands of people around the world celebrate World Rivers Day and advocate for their preservation. The official website of the International Day of Action for Rivers states that this day is a celebration of successes such as dam removal and the gradual restoration of natural river habitats. Although not officially recognized by the United Nations, meetings, events, and demonstrations are held across continents to raise awareness about the risks associated with damming rivers and the often overlooked impacts of river regulation. The initiative was established at the first international meeting of people affected by dams, which took place in Curitiba, Brazil in March 1997. The day serves as an opportunity for people to come together, demonstrate, and demand better practices and approaches from responsible individuals. It is a day of education about the threats facing our rivers and learning about better ecological and energy solutions. Above all, it is a day to unite and remind ourselves that these issues are not just local, but a global problem. So, have you visited your favorite river today?
