World Cage Free Day

On World Day for Farmed Animals, Dr. Jane Goodall, a renowned conservationist and patron of Compassion in World Farming, joined citizens and NGOs in calling on the European Union to fulfill its promise and ban the use of cages for farm animals. Two years ago, the European Commission committed to banning cages for 300 million farm animals, but has yet to publish any proposals for this ban as promised. This failure to fulfill the commitment has outraged supporters of the cage ban and activists across the EU. Supporters of the ban are expressing their outrage by sending a clear message to President von der Leyen through social media posts featuring their hands with a drawn cage. They are urging her to stop the suffering and end the era of cages. Compassion in World Farming has also released a new analysis of European Parliament members' votes on animal welfare since 2019, revealing a clear disconnect between what citizens demand and how MEPs vote. While eight out of ten Europeans believe that the welfare of farm animals should be better protected, only four out of ten MEPs voted for better animal welfare. The European Citizens' Initiative was created to allow EU citizens to directly participate in shaping the EU, but despite the successful outcome of this initiative and the promises made by the Commission, the ban on cages has still not been published. Compassion in World Farming and its partner organizations will continue their campaign until the EU ensures that all cages remain empty.
